5 Reasons to Stop Drinking Soda

Soda, the tasty, sugar-sweetened, acidic beverage that many love and adore, and are having a hard time putting down. Perhaps you are one that loves soda and can’t stop drinking it. It’s hard, there is advertising all around you constantly tempting you to buy another soda. On top of that, is an addicting white substance that goes by the name sugar in the soda that keeps calling your name. Perhaps I could change your mind or at least convince you that it’s time to cut back. Here are 5 reasons to stop drinking soda.

1. Greater Risk of Obesity

People fail to compensate for the extra energy in-take of soda, therefore possibly leading to an increase in overall energy intake (1). A group of researchers examined 30 studies relating to sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and concluded that 93% had a positive association between the onset of overweight or obese and the consumption of sugary drinks in both children and adults (4). The excess sugar just ends up being converted into fat in which enhances as lipogenesis (formation of fat).

2. Lead to Bad Oral Health

The acid in soda etches away dental hard tissue (surface of the tooth) leading to dental erosion (2). The mixture of acids found in soda such as phosphoric, carbonic and, citric combined with sugar is a recipe for disaster for your teeth. Last time I drunk a soda, I could feel the stickiness and sugar just sitting on my teeth after swallowing the soda.

3. Has a Negative Impact on Brain Health

Can exert adverse effects including an increase in glutathione-6-dehydrogenase level, increased levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), glutamate and dopamine alteration in brain waves on electroencephalography (EEG) eventually leading to brain dysfunction, stroke, and dementia (3).

4. Dampen Your Sleep Quality

According to the sleep foundation not only does coffee and alcohol affect your sleep but so does soda. The caffeine in soda blocks chemicals in your brain that helps with sleep and on top of that, soda can worsen heartburn symptoms especially if you have GERD making falling asleep difficult (5).

5. It’s Liquid Sugar

Unlike fruit, which contains fiber to help slow down the absorption of sugar into your bloodstream, soda has zero fiber. Soda is also referred to as “liquid diabetes” because of how it can increase glucose and insulin in the blood. Over time, regular consumption may lead to glucose intolerance, insulin resistance, and inflammation; in turn influence atherosclerosis (plaque buildup in arteries), plaque stability and thrombosis (clot formation), a risk factor for strokes caused by blockage of an artery (6).
