A bad mattress can negatively affect your health in so many ways. Obviously, it can have a profound effect on your quality of sleep. Once, your quality of sleep starts suffering, a snowball of problems will more than likely follow. Many seem to only focus on sleep itself and start taking supplements, pills, and more to help. Although some conditions and situations may warrant one to do so but have you ever considered that your mattress may be the source of your poor sleep?
Let’s look at some ways how your mattress can negatively affect your health
Although sleep requirements vary from individual to individual, not getting the amount of sleep your body requires can lead to weight gain. An uncomfortable mattress will not help with getting the sleep you need which can result in you being sleep deprived. Sleep deprivation has been associated with is associated with increased oxidative stress, glucose intolerance, and insulin resistance which are usually associated with obesity (1). In addition, that lack of sleep can lead to you making poor decisions as it related to your health such as eating unhealthy foods, binging on caffeine and energy drinks, and/or skipping workouts. Apparently, the activity in the frontal lobe is affected which is responsible for decision-making and impulse control (2).
If your mattress is too firm or hard, when your body goes to relax, it may place unnecessary pressure and stress on your joints such as your hips, shoulders, knees, and back. While sleeping, your joints can be under that stress for hours unknowingly having you possibly wake to some aches and pains. Think about a time you went to sleep feeling fine then woke up to pain and discomfort wondering what happened or what you did. You change sleep positions several times throughout the night and sometimes you end up in an awkward position. This pain and discomfort could be the result of your mattress not providing enough give. To help with some of the joint paint consider a body pillow to provide some cushion until you want to invest in a mattress.
Again, if you sleep for a sufficient amount of time, you run the chance of having your body in a position that’s not optimal for health. Remember your body is letting all its weight down when relaxed and is meant to conform to an extent naturally but beyond that, it’ll be in a stressful posture. Therefore, if your mattress has a load of bumps and lumps, and is firm; your spine won’t be in proper alignment.
The same goes if your mattress is too soft. By not being in proper alignment night after night, your posture will eventually suffer. Our bodies want to protect us when in compromising positions and have sensors built in to signal our body to do so by activating certain muscles but chronic stress will lead to tight and knotted muscle. Also, if the stress is too great the muscle may give all together and stress other muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Poor posture during waking hours and at night doesn’t sound like a great combination at all.
Not many people know or think about this but your home is not necessarily just a home to you and your family but also to other living and nonliving organisms as well. Sounds terrible, right? Well, it’s the reality. You go out into the world and bring stuff back home with you all the time and your mattress is part of your home and can serve as a hub for things that may trigger allergies.
Dust mites, dead skin cells, pet hair, dirt, mold, and so forth could be hanging out on your mattress triggering your allergies. These allergic reactions can lead to coughing, sneezing, a runny nose, and itchy eyes. If you have asthma or another type of pulmonary disease, it could also trigger symptoms like shortness of breath, chest pain or tightness, coughing, and wheezing. To help keep these issues at bay, consider investing in an allergy-proof cover for your pillows and mattress to create a barrier for dust mites and other debris. Also, invest in a high-quality air purifier to collect dead skin cells dust mites feed on, pet dandruff, and more in your room as another line of defense for your mattress.
The lack of sleep due to sleeping on a poor mattress can affect your mental health. If you already have a mental health problem such as depressions, seasonal affective disorder, anxiety, bipolar disorder, autism, and/or ADHD, the lack of sleep may further worsen your mental health problems (3). It’s crucial to have an optimal sleep environment in place along with a bedtime routine. Having a mattress that is well suited for you and/or a base that has the ability to adjust to your comfort would be beneficial.
Now, let’s explore some of the signs that signal it’s time for a new mattress.
It has noticeable lumps, bumps, sagging, and/or threads loosening. These are physical traits that can possibly lead to you feeling deformed and achy upon waking.
The springs in your mattress aren’t functioning properly anymore. You definitely don’t want a broken spring coming through the mattress.
You find yourself breaking out in a sweat consistently, perhaps the mattress is hugging your body too much or the material doesn’t dissipate heat well.
Discoloration and Stains
This could a sign of mold or mildew growing, Secretion of sweat and/or other bodily fluid can get into the mattress, especially if you don’t have a mattress protector. If it’s just a typical stain, try a stain remover.
Sounds horrible because it probably is. If the mattress has a foul odor that just won’t come, it’s time to move on to a new mattress. It could be a sign of mold or mildew as well. You can use a natural deodorizer in the meantime.
If there are holes and/or matter coming out of the holes such as springs, stuffing, or foam. Check that warranty to see if this is covered.
Dust Mite or Bedbugs
If you’re sharing your bed with insects or bugs, strongly consider tossing it and spraying it down as soon as possible. Look for feces, outer shells, and monitor if you feel something crawling while lying in bed. Consider an organic and natural spray until the issue is remedied.
Finally, if your mattress has passed the manufacture lifespan for it could possibly be a sign as well but get as much life out of it as you can.
